30 Day Yoga Challenge: Days 21-25

Hi everyone! I apologize for the lack of updates – I have not forgotten about the DO YOU YOGA 30 Day Challenge! Life and work have just been super crazy for the past few days. Here are the videos I’ve done:

Day 21 -“Yoga on Your Back”

Day 22 – “Hamstring Flexibility Part II”

Day 23 – “Standing Eagle Flow”

Day 24 – “Half Moon Flow”

Day 25 – “Yoga to Restore”

I have no complaints about any of these videos, and I am feeling more flexible every day. Today’s video, “Yoga to Restore,” was slow, but my body definitely needed it. It was very soothing and provided some deep stretches. I also repeated days 13 and 17 for fun. I just wanted a little more from my workout.

On Sunday, I went into Manhattan to visit my friend Brit. We went to MoMA to see A Revolutionary Impulse: The Rise of the Russian Avant-Garde. It was a wonderful exhibit and featured works by El Lissitzky and Kazimir Malevich, two artists I really enjoyed while I was studying art history in college. We also saw Francis Picabia: Our Heads Are Round so Our Thoughts Can Change Direction. It was a retrospective and I found it to be absolutely brilliant. I wish I had taken more pictures.

For lunch, we went to a Korean BBQ place called Jongro. We had samgyeopsal, tteokbokki, and haemul pajeon. Everything was very authentic and delicious. We also wandered around a bunch of Korean cosmetics stores and went into H-Mart so I could buy some snacks I missed!

How is your week going?

30 Day Yoga Challenge: Days 19/20

Yesterday, I did day 19 of the DO YOU YOGA 30 Day Challenge. It was called “Energizing Yoga Flow.” It was a little challenging because it moved more quickly than most of the other videos, and I tried really hard to focus on my breath. When I had finished, I definitely felt ready to tackle the rest of my day.

I went to the gym and used the elliptical for 30 minutes. Then, I went out with my mom to run some errands. At the supermarket, I bought a variety of healthy foods: oatmeal, quinoa, veggie burgers, yogurt, Special K bars. I’ve been making a serious effort to eat healthier lately and I’m proud to have stuck with it so far.

In the evening, I actually drove up to Jersey City to see my friend Michcella for her birthday. We went to college together and worked at the radio station there. Our friends Maria and Steve came out to celebrate, too, neither of whom I had seen since they graduated. It was a really nice night. As far as food goes, I had one Miller light, a mozzarella stick, one chicken tender, and a small piece of birthday cake (which was INCREDIBLE).

Michcella, Steve, Maria, and me!

It was a long drive home, but I made it!

Today, I woke up and did day 20 of the challenge. It was called “Twisting Yoga Flow.” This one was really great for my back. Some of the poses were a little hard to balance in, but overall I found it to be another energizing video.

I have to be at work in a couple of hours, so I’ll be back soon.

How are you spending your day?

30 Day Yoga Challenge: Day 18

Today, I did day 18 of the DO YOU YOGA 30 Day Challenge. It was called “Pigeon Served Four Ways,” which was essentially four variations of pigeon pose (it also happens to be one of my favorites). It was really awesome for opening my hips; they were feeling rather tight from going to the gym last night. I felt quite rejuvenated after this video.

For breakfast, I had a spinach feta wrap. Then, my mom and I went out to do some shopping before work. At Kohl’s, I got some really nice socks to wear with my combat boots. At Marshall’s, I got a Betsy Johnson bag, an adorable electric blue bag, a new dress, and some beauty blenders. Everything together cost $54. After, we went to Applebee’s for lunch. I got the Thai shrimp salad, and it only had 390 calories.

I worked from 2:30 to 11 tonight. For a snack, I had a coconut almond Kind bar and for dinner, I had the zesty black bean chicken salad. When I got home, I was pretty hungry so I had some leftover beef and vegetables.

Also, I’d like to make a note that I REALLY REALLY wanted to stop for fast food on the way home. But I didn’t. Hell yeah, self control!

30 Day Yoga Challenge: Day 16

Today, I did day 16 of the DO YOU YOGA 30 Day Challenge. It was called “Happy Yoga Lunges.” I have been feeling the burn all day, but my legs definitely feel good because of it. The stretches were deep and I had to concentrate on my breathing and balance.

After today’s video, Matt came over and we went to the gym together. We focused on arms and my lack of upper body strength is pretty sad. Going to work more actively on that, though. We also ended up playing shuffle board for a while. That was a lot of fun!

A little bit later, we took a drive to Windward Beach. It’s a really nice park by the water and we had some fun taking pictures.

We went to Point Pleasant and walked around a while, even though it was a little chilly. I got a yummy coconut smoothie and we wandered around an enormous antiques shop. Then, we stopped at a little tavern for a drink. We also shared a chicken caesar wrap and didn’t finish all the fries! It was hard because I wanted to stuff them all in my face, but I resisted.

For dinner, I had some salad and chicken soup. Tomorrow I have to be at work by 6:30 AM, so I’m probably going to pass out relatively soon. Today was such a wonderful day.

30 Day Yoga Challenge: Day 13

Today, I did the 13th day of the DO YOU YOGA 30 Day Challenge. It was called “Yoga for Emotional Release.” In addition to being a physical workout, it was also a mental one. The instructor in the video explained that we hold a lot of our stress in our hips. While I did the hip opening poses, I tried to focus on things I wanted to let go of while I stretched. She also said to focus on relaxing your face and mouth because we tend to “swallow” our emotions. It was a very cathartic practice and I highly recommend watching this video.

For breakfast, I had a spinach feta wrap from work (we were throwing a lot out last night, so I took them home to freeze). Then, I went to the gym and used the elliptical for 25 minutes. I was going to do some weights as well, but another person came in and I ended up getting really self conscious.

When I got home, I had a coconut yogurt with some fresh blackberries. It was delicious! Right now, my mom is cooking some stuffed peppers and tomatoes with ground turkey. I can smell it from my room. Yum!

Later, I’m only working six hours and when I get out I’m going to go grab a drink with one of my coworkers because today is her last day with us. It should be a fun time.

What are some ways that you de-stress?

30 Day Yoga Challenge: Day 9

Today, I did the ninth day of the DO YOU YOGA 30 Day Challenge. It was called “Yoga Poses for Balance.” I’ve definitely been away from yoga for far too long since I pretty much stumbled and fell through this entire video. It was surprising to see how horrible my balance has become and I was really upset with myself. This was the first video I actually paused and did a few breaths in child’s pose instead of following the instructor because I just couldn’t keep up with what she was doing.

However, tomorrow will be better.

I’m off all day, so Matt and I will probably check out some consignment and antique shops. That’s something we always enjoy doing together.

What’s something you’ve struggled with recently?

30 Day Yoga Challenge: Day 8

Today, I did the eighth day of the DO YOU YOGA 30 Day Challenge. It was called “Seated Flexibility Yoga Poses.” I found this video relatively boring compared to the previous ones; it was pretty much a filler video. However, I completed it nonetheless. Nothing much else to discuss.

I went to gym, though, and used the elliptical for about 25 minutes. Every time I go, it becomes a little easier for me! Might start trying to do 30 minutes soon.

But now for the most exciting part of my morning…

I’ve lost six pounds! I honestly can’t believe it.

Anyway, today I will give my doggy a bath and move some furniture around in my room. I don’t have to be at work until 4, so I have lots of time to be productive.

What will do you do today?

30 Day Yoga Challenge: Day 6

Today, I did the sixth day of the DO YOU YOGA 30 Day Challenge. It was called “How to do Sun Salutations.” It’s been at least three years since I’ve done sun salutations (I practiced yoga throughout college until I graduated), and I honestly found the flow a little fast for me. I was mildly disappointed with myself, but that only makes me want to practice harder and get my flow up to par.

After I finished the video, I had some blueberry oatmeal for breakfast and went to the gym to use the elliptical like I did yesterday. I always listen to the same song to get me going when I work out. It’s “Rhime of the Ancient Mariner” by Iron Maiden. I love how the tempo changes throughout and it gets me so pumped. It’s also 13 minutes long, so I kind of lose track of time because I know the entire thing by heart.

Do you have any favorite workout songs?

After the gym, I went home and had some banana with chunky peanut butter and a mug of hot green tea. I’ve been feeling so much more energetic lately!

Right now, it’s snowing and I already cleaned off my car once. I am working from 2:30 to 11 PM tonight and I’m honestly not looking forward to that.

What are your plans for today?

30 Day Yoga Challenge: Day 5

Today, I did the fifth day of the DO YOU YOGA 30 Day Challenge. It was called “Yoga for Spine Flexibility.” Like yesterday’s video, it was really good to improve posture and I enjoyed doing the poses. I’m actively focusing on bettering my posture when I’m sitting and standing.

After the video, I had some blueberry oatmeal for breakfast. I also did a load of laundry (which desperately needed to get done). Feeling extra motivated, I also decided to go to the gym and used the elliptical for about 25 minutes.

Now, I’m home and continuing my productivity. I got paid today, so I was able to make an extra payment on one of my student loans, pay my Kohl’s bill in full, and put some money into savings. Woohoo!

I also had some Greek yogurt and a cup of green tea following my workout.

Later, I’m going to run some errands with my mom since I’m off all day.

*Edit*

For lunch, my mom and I ended up going to Red Robin. I love it there because they have so many healthy options. I got a grilled chicken breast sandwich with red onions, avocado, bacon, and tomato (in a lettuce wrap – no bun) and got a side salad instead of fries. The worst part (calorie and fat-wise) was probably the blue cheese dressing on the salad. It was still really delicious, though.

30 Day Yoga Challenge: Day 3

Today, I did the third day of the DO YOU YOGA 30 Day Challenge. It was called “Self-Care Core” and focused on core strength. This was a little challenging for me since I essentially have zero core strength, but I got Matt to do the video with me and that made it more fun. He tried to get me to do some pushups (I literally can’t even do one) and we also did some sit-ups.

For breakfast, we had hot and sour soup with pulled pork that Matt made. It was delicious. Then, we went to Michaels together. I was looking for a piece of wood to make a craft for my best friend (I do pyrography sometimes), but they unfortunately didn’t have what I was looking for. Instead, I got a beautiful new set of colored pencils and a food-themed adult coloring book.

After that, Matt and I went to the mall to walk around a bit and check out some stores. We didn’t buy anything, but we checked out some cool sneakers and skateboards. Later, we went to Shop Rite to get some stuff for dinner. Matt bought a piece of salmon and a cucumber.

Back at his house, I colored while he made some really awesome sushi. After we ate, we watched Kung Fu Hustle which was probably the most visually appealing film I’ve seen in a very long time. It was great.

Now, I’m home and have to be at work at 6 AM tomorrow. Boo.

How was your day?
